Affected by Cancer?...We can help!

Since May 1st 2014 we have been developing a brand new cancer advocacy service. We are providing one to one support, help and advocacy for anyone over 50 who is affected by cancer.

Cancer can bring bewildering changes to the lives of those diagnosed but can also have a major impact on family, carers and friends. We support older people affected by cancer to make sure that healthcare professionals, social services, benefits and other agencies understand and respect their wishes.

We aim to support older people affected by cancer to make informed choices and decisions about treatment and care.

We can help find out whatever they need to know from information on cancer through to what practical help is available locally.

Our scheme is part of the national Cancer, Older People and Advocacy project led by the Older People’s Advocacy Alliance (OPAAL) and is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and The Big Lottery Fund.

Independent Advocacy aims to help:

  • Express views
  • Ask for what is wanted or needed
  • Obtain services and benefits to which individuals are entitled
  • Stand up for peoples interests
  • Safeguard entitlements

"If you're older, isolated and alone, cancer throws up all sorts of worries and fears...advocacy is the only thing that gives you someone you can talk to...someone who has been there...Your family and friends will love you, but there are some things you just can't talk about with them."
